Sranan-Tongo

Family/Group:           English-based Creole

Number of speakers : 100,000

Where spoken:           Suriname, Netherlands

Script:                         Roman

Sranan was previously banned in schools in Suriname by the Dutch colonizers; children speaking their own mother-tongue were punished. In common with languages such as Vietnamese, the tone and inflection are important; the same word may have a completely different meaning when spoken in a different tone.

It is interesting to note that in the Netherlands, particularly in schools with a good ethnic mix, teenagers of all backgrounds are using Sranan slang. This is a sure sign that the Surinamese community is a firmly entrenched segment of Dutch society.
