Like English and Danish, Dutch is descended from Low German and has a strong French influence. Translation of the Bible and writings of poet Joost van der Vondel (1587-1679) helped to establish General Cultural Netherlandic, now the standard form of written Dutch. Dutch was taught in schools in Suriname and children were punished for speaking their native Srnan-Tongo. The schools in Suriname continue to carry out the education in Dutch
